Inspect Fuselages for Cracks, Boeing 737 Max Operators Instructed

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has mandated that operators of Boeing 737 Max aircraft conduct inspections to check for potential structural cracks in the fuselage. This directive affects approximately 471 planes, with inspections scheduled to commence in September. The focus of these inspections is on a component called the bear strap, a crucial structural element that supports the fuselage around the exit doors. The move follows the discovery of similar cracks in older Boeing 737 Next Generation models, which led to previous inspections of those aircraft.

As of now, no cracks have been identified in the 737 Max fleet. However, due to the aircraft’s design and manufacturing similarities with the Next Generation models, regulators are taking precautionary measures to ensure safety. The FAA has expressed concerns that undetected cracks could compromise the structural integrity of the aircraft, posing potential risks.

Boeing has acknowledged the issue, stating that the company has been collaborating with airlines on the matter since its identification in 2019. The aircraft manufacturer supports the mandatory inspections, emphasizing that these checks are intended to detect and address any problems before they escalate to critical levels.

This latest inspection requirement adds to the ongoing scrutiny of the 737 Max, which has been under the spotlight following previous safety concerns and quality issues related to its manufacturing and engineering. The aircraft type was notably grounded worldwide after two tragic crashes in 2018 and 2019, leading to heightened regulatory oversight.
