Meeting at 4:00 GMT: EU Warns Trump’s Tariff Threat Might Cause Alliance Fracture

With an emergency meeting set for 4:00 GMT, the EU warns Trump’s tariff threat might cause a permanent fracture in the Western alliance. European Union leaders have reacted with alarm to President Trump’s ultimatum regarding the purchase of Greenland. The bloc is mobilizing rapidly to address what it sees as an unprecedented mix of territorial ambition and trade warfare.
Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa issued a joint statement condemning the move. They warned that the proposed tariffs risk a “dangerous downward spiral” in transatlantic relations. The leaders pledged that Europe would remain united and coordinated, refusing to compromise on the sovereignty of its member states.
The financial threat is immediate and severe. Trump announced that from February 1, countries such as Denmark, Germany, France, and the UK would face a 10% tariff on all goods. He added that these tariffs would rise to 25% on June 1 if the US does not acquire Greenland, effectively holding European industry hostage.
In addition to the trade dispute, the EU clarified the nature of military exercises in the Arctic. Leaders stated that the Danish drills were pre-coordinated and designed to strengthen security in the region. They insisted that these actions pose no threat to anyone and are part of a shared interest in Arctic stability.
The EU reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue, noting that talks between the Kingdom of Denmark and the US started last week. However, the bloc remains firm that economic coercion is not the way forward. Sunday’s meeting will focus on solidifying the EU’s collective stance and supporting Denmark against these demands.
