The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and Việt Nam are set to enhance their cooperation, focusing on strengthening ties between Canberra, Hà Nội, and Ho Chi Minh City. This development follows discussions between Vietnamese Ambassador Phạm Hùng Tâm and ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr. Ambassador Tâm has welcomed Barr’s upcoming visit to Việt Nam, expressing optimism that it will pave the way for new collaborative opportunities.
During their talks, Ambassador Tâm underscored the vast potential for partnerships in various sectors, including renewable energy, innovation, education, tourism, and smart urban development. He proposed establishing a formal friendship and cooperation agreement between Hà Nội and the ACT to ensure sustained collaboration across these fields.
Chief Minister Barr, preparing for his first visit to Việt Nam, highlighted the country’s significance as a priority economic partner under the ACT’s international engagement strategy. He responded positively to the proposal of forming a sister-city relationship with Hà Nội. Barr also emphasized the potential for joint efforts in green transition initiatives, electric transport, and renewable energy projects, aligning with the shared goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Furthermore, Barr expressed a keen interest in engaging in public diplomacy activities during any future visits by senior Vietnamese leaders to Australia. His visit marks a significant step in reinforcing the economic and cultural ties between the ACT and Việt Nam, promising mutual benefits through shared initiatives and exchanges.
