Alberta’s government is set to move forward with plans for a high-speed rail line connecting Edmonton, Red Deer, and Calgary. This fall, a formal request will be issued for private companies to submit proposals for the project. Premier Danielle Smith announced that once a private-sector participant is chosen, the federal government will refer the project to its Major Projects Office. Alberta aims to select the preferred proponent by April 2027.
The proposed high-speed rail service is intended to enhance transportation links across the province, with planned connections to both Calgary and Edmonton international airports. This initiative comes as the Edmonton-Calgary corridor, which encompasses about 80 percent of Alberta’s population, experiences rapid growth and increasing demand for improved transportation infrastructure.
