Commemorating the 41st anniversary of the Air India Flight 182 bombing, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the need for continuous vigilance to combat violent extremism. The tragic incident, which remains one of Canada’s deadliest terrorist attacks, requires ongoing remembrance and stronger preventative measures, according to Carney.
The Air India Flight 182, also known as the Kanishka, was destroyed by a bomb on June 23, 1985, while flying over the Atlantic Ocean near Ireland. This horrific act of terrorism claimed the lives of all 329 passengers and crew on board, including 268 Canadian citizens. To honor the victims, memorial events were held in several cities across Canada—Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver—as well as in Ahakista, Ireland.
Prime Minister Carney underscored the Canadian government’s commitment to bolstering national security, dismantling terrorist networks, and countering all forms of violent extremism. He highlighted recent legislative efforts targeting hate propaganda, extremist symbols, and threats against communities as part of these initiatives.
The remembrance ceremonies were attended by government officials and law enforcement representatives, alongside India’s High Commissioner to Canada, who paid tribute to the victims. The High Commissioner stressed the importance of remembering the profound impact of terrorism and ensuring accountability for those responsible.
As part of its ongoing strategy to combat terrorism, Canada is collaborating with international allies to safeguard its citizens. Community organizations have also called for the consistent application of laws designed to prevent intimidation and extremist activities, reinforcing the collective effort to thwart future threats.
