The Auckland War Memorial Museum has closed its doors to the public this weekend following the discovery of asbestos dust in key areas of the building during heritage restoration assessments.
Asbestos particles were initially detected in Te Marae Ātea Māori Court and the Pacific galleries, with further contamination confirmed in the Grand Foyer through swab testing. The foyer, a central evacuation route, prompted immediate closure and a review of emergency procedures.
The nearly century-old building is undergoing significant preservation work, during which the asbestos was uncovered. Museum officials emphasized that structures of this age often contain legacy materials, including asbestos, necessitating careful management during renovations.
Specialist crews will be working over the weekend to safely remove the hazardous dust. Although closed to visitors, the museum remains under the supervision of essential security and facility personnel to ensure safety and ongoing monitoring.
