OpenNebula Systems has unveiled OpenNebula 7.4, codenamed “Helix,” marking the latest advancement in their open-source cloud and virtualization platform. This version aims to simplify cloud management for enterprises while catering to the increasing demands for artificial intelligence infrastructure. A significant highlight of the update is the revamped Sunstone management interface, which promises a quicker and more user-friendly experience for administrators. Noteworthy enhancements include better navigation, advanced resource inspection tools, reorganized settings, and graphical user interface-based management of VirtioFS, all of which aim to ease day-to-day cloud operations.

The automation capabilities of OpenNebula 7.4 receive a substantial boost with features such as OneSwap for bulk VMware migrations, enhanced OneDRS resource scheduling, intelligent datastore selection, and storage migration. Additionally, improvements to OneKS facilitate managed Kubernetes deployments, helping organizations modernize their infrastructure while minimizing operational complexities.

To cater to AI and high-performance computing workloads, the platform incorporates support for Axelera AI accelerators, along with native NVIDIA GPU integration within the Slurm appliance. It also introduces automated Bare Metal as a Service (BMaaS) orchestration through the NVIDIA Infrastructure Controller (NICo). Networking sees enhancements with VLAN Group-level authorization and Open vSwitch Switchdev support, aimed at boosting performance and ensuring secure multi-tenant environments.

In terms of data protection, OpenNebula 7.4 strengthens backup capabilities with updates to the OpenNebula Backup Exporter (OneBEX), introduces the option for Selected Disk Backups, and adds production-ready support for Ubuntu 26.04. Other improvements span across storage, monitoring, networking, high availability, and VMware compatibility.

Alongside the platform update, OpenNebula Systems has rolled out OpenNebula Apps (OneApps) 7.4.0. This release brings updated virtual appliances, AArch64 support for OneKS, compatibility with Alpine Linux 3.24, and deployment enhancements tailored for enterprise cloud environments. According to the company, OpenNebula 7.4 is designed to help enterprises streamline cloud operations, accelerate infrastructure modernization, and foster the development of AI-powered private and sovereign cloud deployments.
