Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is pushing for a unified approach to datacentre development across the nation, focusing on energy consumption and environmental concerns. As he meets with state and territory leaders, Albanese aims to introduce legislation that would establish national standards for datacentres. These standards would mandate that datacentres cover their own infrastructure expenses, avoid increasing energy prices, and minimize water usage, addressing the growing concern of their environmental footprint.
This initiative comes against the backdrop of a forecast by Australia’s energy market operator, which predicts a significant rise in electricity consumption by datacentres over the coming decade. The increase is largely driven by the expanding demands of artificial intelligence and cloud computing. By 2035-36, the energy consumption of datacentres is expected to surge from about 5 terawatt-hours to 34 terawatt-hours, potentially making up 13% of the nation’s total electricity use.
Currently, Australia hosts 165 operational datacentres, with an additional 225 projects in the pipeline. Despite this growth, the industry faces uncertainties, as several previously proposed projects have been shelved. New regulations would also require datacentre projects to consider their impacts on local communities, ensuring they are situated away from residential areas, schools, and key agricultural or future housing sites.
In addition to datacentre regulations, Albanese is working on broader artificial intelligence legislation. This legislation will address key areas such as copyright protections, security, safety, and skills development, aiming to ensure Australians can economically benefit from AI advancements while bolstering protection for creators and enhancing national security.
However, the proposal has not been without its challenges. Some state leaders have expressed concerns over the inclusion of renewable energy requirements for datacentres, adding a layer of political complexity to the establishment of consistent national rules. Despite these challenges, the government remains committed to its reform agenda, aiming to secure a sustainable future for Australia’s datacentre industry.
