In a significant escalation of hostilities, Ukraine has reportedly launched one of its most extensive drone operations against Russia since the conflict began, resulting in at least six fatalities and igniting a large fire at a distribution warehouse near Moscow. According to Russia’s Defence Ministry, a record number of 1,478 Ukrainian drones were intercepted in a single day, a claim that remains unverifiable. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that approximately 600 drones targeted the Moscow region, with 201 being destroyed, leading to one fatality in the area.
The attack caused a massive blaze at a Wildberries distribution center near Podolsk, situated roughly 25 miles south of central Moscow. The facility, spanning about 250,000 square meters, suffered severe damage and was rendered inoperative, as reported by Ukraine’s military. Ukrainian forces have been increasingly utilizing long-range drones to hit Russian military and economic targets far from the front lines. They allege that several Wildberries facilities are linked to military logistics, making them targets for these strikes. This development underscores Ukraine’s advancing capabilities in executing long-range attacks, while Russia continues to rely heavily on drones and missiles for strikes against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
On the other side of the conflict, Russian strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least seven individuals in Ukraine, with casualties reported in Kryvyi Rih and the Sumy region. In Kyiv, a missile attack injured six people and sparked fires, including one at a major book market where numerous businesses reportedly lost all their inventory. In a separate incident, a Spanish fighter jet, part of a NATO patrol, shot down a suspected Russian drone that had breached Romanian airspace, according to NATO officials.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of persistently targeting civilian infrastructure, claiming that Moscow launched over 1,550 attack drones, nearly 1,560 guided bombs, and 62 missiles against Ukraine in the past week alone. The intensifying conflict, marked by both nations expanding their use of long-range weaponry, heightens the risk of increased casualties and destruction far from the front lines.
