During Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent visit to Calgary, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney committed to bolstering Ukraine’s air defense and drone capabilities. Canada has announced a support package worth C$350 million (equivalent to US$253 million) through a program led by the United States to provide Ukraine with military equipment, training, and other forms of defense assistance. This pledge comes as Ukraine is facing a surge in Russian missile and drone assaults.
Moreover, Canada is set to offer C$450 million in loan guarantees aimed at reinforcing Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. This financial support is intended to aid in the repair of damaged facilities, enhance energy storage, and ensure reliable electricity supplies to essential services like hospitals. The cooperation between the two countries extends beyond immediate defense needs; Carney and Zelenskyy signed an agreement to work towards a “hundred-year partnership” that will focus on defense, critical minerals, energy, and other collaborative areas.
In an effort to further support Ukraine, Canada revealed that 30% of its newly produced domestic drones would be allocated to Ukrainian forces. According to Zelenskyy, these drones will be utilized on the front lines to aid Ukrainian troops and safeguard civilians from ongoing threats.
Looking ahead, Zelenskyy is also anticipated to meet with US President Donald Trump in New York later this month. This meeting may take place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, as international efforts persist to revive negotiations aimed at bringing an end to the ongoing conflict.
