Parliamentary visits to Taiwan have been a routine part of New Zealand’s diplomatic interactions for decades and align with the nation’s One China policy, according to New Zealand officials.
The New Zealand government, taken aback by China’s move, has tasked its diplomatic representatives with obtaining an explanation from Beijing while voicing its disapproval. A spokesperson for New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters highlighted the unexpected nature of China’s actions and the government’s intention to address the situation through diplomatic channels.
In response, Taiwan’s foreign ministry has criticized China’s restrictions, labeling them as retaliatory measures and asserting that China lacks the authority to meddle in Taiwan’s interactions with foreign legislators. The ministry stressed that such parliamentary diplomacy is standard practice among democratic countries, underscoring the legitimacy of these exchanges.
On the other hand, China has defended its decision by asserting its opposition to visits to Taiwan by lawmakers from countries that officially recognize Beijing. Chinese officials argue that legislators are not ordinary citizens, and their visits contradict China’s stance on Taiwan, which it views as a sensitive issue.
