Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has vowed to take decisive action to defend Canada’s national interests in light of new tariff measures imposed by the United States. During a gathering of provincial and territorial leaders in Charlottetown, Carney assured that his government is steadfast in its support for Canadian workers, farmers, businesses, and families as trade tensions with the United States persist.
The announcement follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to implement an additional 50% tariff on a range of Canadian exports, including selected dairy products, alcoholic beverages, motor vehicles, and related goods. These tariffs are set to be enforced starting August 19. Carney criticized the move, arguing it breaches the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) and labeling it as another instance of unilateral trade action by Washington.
Carney expressed strong opposition to the tariffs, highlighting that they compromise the spirit of the trade agreement between the two countries. He emphasized the importance of maintaining fair trade practices and underscored the impact these tariffs could have on Canadian industries and consumers alike.
Despite the escalating trade tensions, Carney indicated that he recently engaged in a conversation with President Trump, during which both leaders concurred on the necessity to ramp up trade negotiations. This dialogue aims to address and resolve the ongoing trade disputes between the neighboring nations.
